11 MILE MARINA WEEKLY FISHING REPORT 08.25.22

“ITS ABOUT THE CATCHING”

MARINA STORE HOURS: EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1 SAT 7:00AM - 7:00PM SUNDAY 7:00AM - 6:00PM MON - THURS 8:00AM - 5:00PM FRIDAY 8:00AM to 6:00PM

BREAK WATER IMPROVEMENT PLAN: We have been informed that the State plans a new and significant install to replace the current and failing Wave Eater system. The current barrel system is at least 20 years old and not nearly what it use to be. The new system by Pacific Netting from WA may be if it works as advertised a true game changer for Eleven Mile. We were also informed work will begin around the last week of September. Boat ramp will remain open.

CURRENT CONDITIONS: Fleeting Fall conditions last week with cooler temps and regular rain made for very pleasant days and turned the fish bite on. Some of the best action in August we have seen.

Hailed pretty hard one day. When the sun is out it gets hot fast. Last week the water temp bounced from 68 down to 64 and now back up to 67. Weeds galore, water clarity fair as Summer algae blooms occur. This is not “blue” algae. Its regular nature that happens annually about this time.

Due to staff shortage the CPW main office here at the Park is closed Wednesday, Thursday and only open half day on Friday. This puts pressure on us as many frustrated folks think we can help them with camping and Park issues. We are sorry but we are not involved in Park matters please don’t take your frustrations out on our staff. We do have a great staff that will help if possible. Make sure you have your fishing license in advance. Bring $9.00 for your daily pass if you need one. Apologies but we simply cannot make change for everyone that needs it for Park Passes and showers. When the Park office is closed we are not able to drop everything we may be doing and do a fishing license on demand. Patience is a virtue. Breathe

MOVING FORWARD: We normally were open everyday in September. It is likely we will be closing one if not two days per week due to staff shortage probably Tuesday or Wednesday. No decision yet but we have currently turned off online reservations for weekdays in September. Please call for boat and guide reservations for any dates after that. Updates posted as needed.

NO PIKE TOURNAMENT: We missed the last two years Covid related. This year we simply will not have the staff to pull it off. It takes a lot of prep, planning and work to get it done and it’s just not in the cards this year. However we are not pleased that Fishing Has No Boundaries FHNB loses one of their biggest fundraisers again this year SO we will host a fundraiser on their behalf on Saturday September 10. They will be here for a big BBQ and Crawfish Boil. We will have a live band and other surprises. We will give away $500.00 to the heaviest Northern Pike weighed in that day. No entry fee Spinney or Eleven Mile. Weigh in will be done in private and weights will not be disclosed until the end. In order to weigh in a fish you will need to make a donation to FHNB. Stay tuned for more details. This is not a contest it is a fundraiser for FHNB who take disabled kids and adults fishing. This years event will be held at Pueblo State Park on September 17.

We have a great selection of Tasmanian Devils because an earlier in the season order just showed up. Hard to find patterns or hard to find in general may be hanging on our wall.

TASMANIANS TASMANIANS TASMANIANS HOT catching patterns #56, #55, #125, #Y82, others with pink We also have 4 packs like getting one for free

PIC # 1: Wow that’s a nice one!!

PIC # 2: Not quite as big but another nice one

PIC # 3: We call this the “Pike Lover Grip”. Just grab them in the eyes and they go totally limp. Considering what those teeth can do to your hand…pic courtesy jl

PIC # 4: And the Trout bite was on too!! pic courtesy jl

PIC # 5: Good time had by all

TROUT: GOOD TO VERY GOOD: That dip in water temp just made the fish go crazy. No guarantee that strong bite will continue but you won’t know if you don’t try. Things slowed up a bit as the water warmed back up. Lots of baits working. Bigger fish caught on tube jigs. We have a great selection of high quality tubes made Dry Creek Outfitters. Trolling made challenging by weeds. Shore action sporadic.

KOKANEE SALMON: FAIR TO POOR:: A bit of a bite is back on. Lead core or down riggers almost a must. North Shore to Buoy Line has seen action. Tasmanian Devils the most productive for us. Pink is good but Brown Trout also has been good. One in pic above caught about 9:00AM. Others have been caught through out the day with sporadic bites. Some days the bite is hot some days its cold cold. That’s when its called fishing not catching

NORTHERN PIKE: VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT: Started last Thursday as the weather caused a dramatic drop in water temp over the course of the weekend. Lots of nice fish caught through out the day. Shallow water of 5 feet all the way to 20 feet saw productive times. Tube jigs, Husky Jerks, Kastmasters, Daredevils and many more baits were working. Mostly pitching and working certain spots. Too many weeds to troll shallow. Drift and pitch or anchor down and work your spot. Where you may ask. Stop in we will show you on the map.

CRAWFISH: VERY GOOD: It’s prime time. Fishing license required no limit. Boil em up. We have some great traps for sale. The ones we use for maximum production. It’s a Cajun thing

SPECIAL NOTE: 11 Mile Marina is located at the North Shore in Eleven Mile State Park, Lake George Colorado. A CPW Park Pass is required on all vehicles entering the Park.  Any fees for Guide/Outfitter/Rental services do not include Park fees, CO fishing license or gratuities.

SUMMER BOAT RENTAL/RESERVATIONS: As we move into Summer short staffed like every other business it is not out of the realm of possibility that we are no different than the airlines. We sell a reservation and then don’t have the crew and cancel because we have no choice. We certainly hope it doesn’t come to that but when you are short staffed already and some one pulls a no show no call it becomes impossible to put certain numbers of boats on the water. We must staff for all safety contingencies. So the reservation does not guarantee the boat but it does guarantee the boat if we are properly staffed. Crossing our fingers.

MARINA STORE AND LAKE SPECIALISTS: Camping, Fishing Equipment, Flies, Lures, Bait, Clothing, Food, Snacks, Drinks, Ice Cream and official purveyors of Boars Head brand products. WE ARE HERE FISHING EVERYDAY AND CAN PUT YOU ON THE FISH.

PIC # 1: First time at Eleven Mile and landed a fish of a lifetime.. Caught on Monday at North Shore casting from the rocks. Windy so what! We’ll take the wind any day if we can catch a fish like that. Monster Brown 30” length 20” girth 14.8lbs

PIC # 2: Visiting from Phoenix on a father/son fishing trip to Colorado. Two firsts here. Aidan (right) catches his first salmon ever and biggest Trout ever. Memories made at the Mile on an 11 Mile Marina Guide trip.

PIC # 3: We have what you need and then some.

TROUT: GOOD TO VERY GOOD: Spring action continues with catching good from shore and boat. Many from Winter stocking but are fun to catch and ready to eat. 11 to 13 inches. Sometimes its non stop bites. Lots of bigger Cuttbows and Browns being caught ranging from 17 to 20 plus inches. Fish seems to be deep and shallow depending on time of day. Many baits are working. Start with your favorite and if no luck start moving through the tackle box. Jointed Rapala J-7 in gold or RT, always a Kastmaster, Green Rainbow Cowbells if you like them

KOKANEE SALMON: GOOD TO VERY GOOD: Well we are all in a Kokanee tizzy. Catching has been fun and better than many previous years for this time of the season particularly for folks who might not normally catch salmon. Generally a finicky fish Winter or Summer many many different baits have worked. Caught one on a jointed Rapala not something you would put on and say “I’m going salmon fishing”. We have caught and spoke to anglers who have landed them West in the middle out from Stoll. An orange Flatfish come on man can you believe a fisherman…well one old timer told us he was catching on them. The point is we have used many different baits and scored Kokes. Most successful have been Tas Devils, Arnies Dynamac, Wedding Rings and a variety of Mack’s tackle. Sling blades or dodgers if you like. Haven’t heard from the pop gear crowd but we suspect they are also catching them. Stop in for latest info and hot bait.

We like scent products on our presentation. We have number of ones we are trying with success. Pro Cure and Pautzke Firegel seem to work the best.

NORTHERN PIKE: GOOD: Some nice ones being reported caught around North Shore to Stoll and Sucker Cove to Lazy Boy. Howbert to Witchers hasn’t been too bad either. Troll big sticks in 10 feet of water near shoreline areas. They like the Pike patterns, Perch and Firetiger.

CURRENT CONDITIONS: The recent cold snap has kept the ice firm and thick. Look for to up to 24 inches or more in some places. Minimal snow out of last storms but as snow melts around the lake ice in close will melt sooner. Spring ice conditions call for “early on early off” but we are still in full on Winter ice conditions. Things can change dramatically based on weather but just because it is 70 degrees on the front range does not mean we immediately have open water. Stay clear of rock edges as ice gets weak as rocks absorb sun energy.

PIC # 1: This 18.5lbs Northern caught during Marina March Madness contest. This was the first fish the contestant ever caught ice fishing. Caught on sucker meat on a Northland Quick Strike rig put down just a few feet below the ice.

PIC # 2: This great Marina March Madness Trout caught in shallow water very close to Marina.

PIC # 3: Marina March Madness contestant with a nice one right behind the store!

PIC # 4: Team # 29 Cross/Rice had no significant points going into Saturdays event and just tore it up going on to win the Eagle Claw Shappell Colorado Classic Championship EDA Division. Contest details posted soon.

PIC # 5: You can only find these at the 11 Mile Marina Store and maybe something like them at Valley Country Tackle in Aurora. Say hi to Louise.

TROUT: FAIR TO GOOD: Action happening early through late morning. Look to shallow water sandy bottom 5 feet or less and a bait presentation like salmon or trout eggs, nightcrawlers or Berkley Power Bait or Pautzke Firebait. The larger fish are in spawning under the ice. A small Tiny Tot with half of meal worm has also worked well. Occasional nice Trout also to be had when hunting Kokanee.

KOKANEE SALMON: GOOD TO EXCELLENT: Yes still happening!! The epic bite continues. At this point you can catch them with out a jigging machine but electronics is really a must. You can jig Kastmaster and Swedish Pimples and bring them in. They wont stick around like they would if you had a jigging machine but you can bring them back with vigorous jigging action. There are periods of massive frustration and rejection followed by intense bites. Switch up if rejected. Whats the point in keeping a rejected bait on. When they won’t hit the spoon try a dead stick crappie jig or paddle bug. Colors matter but you have to figure the pattern out. Duck Deer Island still good as well as North Shore. Contest saw even a salmon wining money.

NORTHERN PIKE: FAIR TO GOOD: Good luck finding a waterdog. Success is being had by those that use the right size sucker with the proper presentation. It’s all about presentation and patience. Look to 10 feet of water or less. We have the proper suckers and will show you how to rig them. Other baits include large tube jigs in white or chartreuse, One oz Kastmasters with a buck-tail and piece of sucker or an accidental trout bait..you just never know. Stoll and Howbert have been good of late. Mid morning through mid afternoon. Trophies available to be caught get yours now.
